Anyone Been To Tijuana?
Has anyone ever visited the Mexican bordertown? If so, what is it like in your opinion? Is it worth spending more than a day there or should one catch the last trolley/train back to San Diego?
Anyway, I’m back at work after spending a few days in my hometown of Liverpool. There is still a heap of photos to sort out from my last trip in order to update my posts but I’m already planning my next trip with friends. And the one after that.
On a sad note, on a literal and figurative level, I’d learned yesterday that the hot and gorgeous Asian receptionist at my company will be leaving. Yes, all the straight guys are in mourning. After a hard and dreary commute to work, the receptionist instantly brightens our day as we pass by. Lizzie, you will sorely be missed. Good luck to you because I’d always knew your talents befit a position more promising than that of a receptionist.

Tijuana sucks, but then, I think San Diego does too.
Hey, nice new layout! But I think you have a very complicated soul…
i’m so excited to hear that you will finally return to SF!!!! i hope it all works out cuz i’d love to introduce you to vinh! keep me posted!! =)
sorry, i’ve never been to tijuana….although i have many friends who have. i hear that one day is good enough there. i think the last train/trolley is a good bet!
sorry your hottie receptionist is leaving….maybe she will be replaced with another hottie? the idea should be suggested to management….they need to understand that a hot receptionist is the easiest way to keep you straight guys going to work and working hard! hehehee
Haven’t been to Tijuana for a few year althought I’ve come through to the US from Mexico at other borders.. Los Dos Laredos, Brownsville.. Tijuana is ok.. there are some party beaches, Rosarito etx close by for some college drunken action at night. U r coming to SF?
Only 1.5 hr drive from my univ. Hmm, my experiences in TJ: drove halfway only having to go back cuz one girl forgot her ID. Later, with one guy in tow, getting hit on by freakin’ aggressive Mexicans. They won’t stop! Ew! Going to a strip club with ten guys. Lotta behind-the-door love while I nursed a beer. ECK! Only to have ONE guy fall behind. I finally got home at 6am only to wake up 2 hrs later for a school event until 12! I knocked out all afternoon. So I don’t like TJ.
I’ve only been once and I would never go back again. Maybe if you just wanted the experience you could go for half a day but I wouldn’t suggest going out of your way or spending much more time there. The traffic and driving experience is scary. Getting through border patrol is annoying. And for me, I was followed around by too many small children begging for money while I gave whatever I have and then practically ran away with tears streaming down my face and then spent an hour in a bathroom stall crying. Some people like to go for the shopping and although there are beautiful things to buy, I’m not sure it’s worth it. So many parts of Mexico are beautiful and the people can be lovely but Tijuana is not the place for that.
Tijuana IS a destination. How long you stay there depends on your researching the travel books and internet info and developing your purposes. Downtown Tijuana is happening in the day for shopping, and at night is happening like for partying down like if you’re a college kid into decadence.
If you have more time and transport, then the beaches like Rosarito like someone mentioned. Don’t know if you want to do sociological research ie people watching, Tijuana IS Mexico and being a bordertown it is and is not typical Mexico.
Like I say, if you cruise the internet and other research outlets, and develop purpose, you will find reasons to stay longer, and if you only came during the day to shop, that would be worthwhile, too. For your purposes of seeing the exotic, I would guess 36 hours would be a good plan for ‘doing nothing but taking it all in’, because you’re more serious and sensitive to absorbing culture than the typical tourist that has to rush to see all the standardized sights but miss out on connecting with the locals and the pulse and feel of the culture.
You’re coming to SF? If so, I’ll message my cellphone. But I’ll be leaving town like June 18-26 and might be gone again after that.
You’re comment on China …. Americans are more outraged about the poison that leaked into pet food and possibly toothpaste than Tienanman or organ harvesting of live Falun Gong practioners or the cultural genocide against the Tibetans etc. Of course the victims of Chinese Communism for example cannot identify “Tank Guy” and have no clue about Tienanman, a bit ironic since Chinese complain about the Japanese being equally “societally amnesic” about all the atrocities that they did to China in WWII.
Another Tijuana issue is whether to park in San Diego, and walk into Tijuana (recommended), or will have an experienced driver take you. Do not consider driving there on your own, it’s complicated like car insurance issues and I don’t know if you can even legally take a rental car there, and nowhere to park legally etc.
Sorry, I have never been to tijana.. o-o
Ryc: buwhahahaha I know! I always try to see as much movies as I can while I’m here because it always takes a while for the movies to come out in Europe.. XP
I like your new Lay-out btw
Yes. if you asked me? Don’t bother going. If you want to venture, 1 day is MORE than enough and remember to bring your own bottle of water! Bring a few. Don’t drink the local water. At least that was what i was told years ago. I don’t know if they improved by much. I guess you can check the forums to see if they got any better over the years.
Tijuana is a not high on my list. I love to travel but I can’t stand going there (and it’s less than an hour away from me). You can walk across the border and get some good tacos and churros and walk back. I’d spend 2 hours there max.
ryc: yes, i’m asian. i’m a 100% kimchi loving korean, living in the south for a bit. born and raised until age 11. gof off the boat in a town full of jewish girls and for awhile thought i was jewish too. i kid, of course. i see you’ve been there in 06. never been to tijuana, sorry. goodbye to your eye candy. like the new layout.
Hi I was in Tijuana for a day, it was pretty dissapointing. Basically we shopped and bought some cheezy stuff…Are you on facebook btw?
