RYC: yes. I was reading on the airlines a travel book about NYC. It suggested that you only take “yellow” cabs with an NYC medallion on the hood. This was proof that the person driving is a Legit NYC cab.
It also stated that as you leave the airport, you may be approached by a driver or drivers (before the exit) who will lead you out to the parking lot, where they’d have a car with tinted windows (usually a black car/SUV).
Well, the travel book also noted that you can be taken “for a ride” by these people, in that you’d negotiate a price (usually much higher than a taxi) for them to take you someplace.
Now, you may or may not reach your destination in a timely fashion….if, at all.
Well, as I was leaving the airport – the exact situation confronted me as I got off the plane. I was “mislead” in thinking the person to provide me a ride was an actual “NYC Taxi” driver….when in fact, she was leading me to the parking lot.
I then remembered that the cabs are right outside the exit doors of the airport…and I shouldn’t be going to the parking lot.
She said that she’d drive me to the Hotel I needed to go to, for about $70.
The Taxi I ended up taking only cost me about $25.
So, it payed to read a crazy tour guide book.
(it also pays for me to be 6 foot 4 inches in height…and 250+ lbs….and look italian…if you get my “sopranos” reference.)
